Rosan Walters
My name is Rosan (pronounced Rose Ann). I am from central Iowa. I am just starting my journey toward a Master of Education degree at Post University. I recently received my BS in Emergency Management and Homeland Security from Post with a minor in Forensic Psychology and a concentration in Criminal Justice-Leadership.
I have been a paramedic since 1999 and have my Firefighter I. My goals are, hopefully, to teach others about public service and design training programs for emergency services.
Fun Facts: I am the mom of three grown children and grandma of ten beautiful grandchildren aged 4-18 years old. Three of the grandchildren live with me. I have three dogs, a Lab, a Standard Poodle that is my service dog, and a toy poodle that is nicknamed “the tiny terrorist”. I have trained two rescue Danes and three Chihuahuas as service dogs and placed them with people with PTSD. I also do rescue transports (the latest was a dog that moved from AZ up to WI), have two cats, twenty some chickens + two turkeys (organic and free-range), two goats, a rescued pig from a hog confinement, and one varmint killing mini donkey. It is quite the hobby farm that keeps me on my toes.
It can be a lot of fun. Especially when the animals show their appreciation for the care they receive. They are always happy to see me and show it by talking to me or coming up and rubbing up against me, asking for pets and pats. It is very satisfying to be able to take a dog from a bad situation, heal them enough that they have confidence in themselves again, and then place them with a person that needs that little bit of extra help from another living being in order to get through their day.
You would be amazed at the number of emergency responders that have some form of PTSD due to the things they see and deal with in their jobs, and coming home to a dog that has no judgment, just love for you, can be such a healing tool.
